Sony is shaking up the gaming world with the introduction of a slimmer version of the PlayStation 5. This new model is designed to replace the original PS5 and comes with significant changes.
Slim and Trim: Size and Weight
The Slim PlayStation 5 boasts remarkable reductions in size and weight. It’s approximately 30% smaller and weighs between 18% to 24% less compared to the original PS5. The specific weight reduction depends on whether you opt for the PlayStation 5 or the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.
For reference, the original PS5 is known for its substantial form factor, measuring 390 mm x 260 mm x 104 mm (15.4 inches tall, 10.24 inches deep, and 4.09 inches wide). Yujin Morisawa, the designer of the original PS5, once likened its large size to the comfort one might find in household objects, plants, or animals.
Enhanced Storage: More Space for Your Games
One of the major upgrades in this slim model is the storage capacity. The original PS5 came with an 825GB NVME SSD, but the newer version bumps this up to a full 1TB of storage. This translates to approximately 800GB of usable storage space for games and media.
Pricing Updates: Digital Edition and Optical Media
There’s a price adjustment for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which previously cost around $400. Now, it’s expected to be priced at an MSRP of $449.99. However, there’s exciting news for Digital Edition owners. You will finally be able to play optical media on your device, thanks to a plug-and-play external UHD Blu-ray disc drive that Sony is making available for $79.99.
Say Goodbye to Old Covers: Embrace Fresh Designs
It’s worth noting that all existing PlayStation 5 covers will no longer be compatible with these new models. But fret not, as Sony has plans in place to release a new series of external removable covers and a new vertical stand. These covers come in a variety of colors, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. Look forward to seeing these covers hit the market in early 2024.

While these updated PlayStation 5 units haven’t officially been named “PlayStation 5 Slim,” they’re here to replace the older models. These slimmer PS5s are set to hit the shelves in November, just in time for the holiday season, and their MSRP remains at $499.99.
